Istanbul Airport surpassed Heathrow as Europe’s busiest airport in July, with the Turkish hub accommodating 8.15 million passengers compared to Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This shift highlights Istanbul’s growing aviation prominence since its opening in 2018. While Heathrow experienced a 1.5% decrease in passenger numbers from the previous year, Istanbul enjoyed a 2.3% increase, partly due to disruptions at Heathrow linked to the Middle East conflict.
The changing dynamics have intensified calls for the UK government to approve Heathrow’s proposed third runway. Currently, the airport operates at nearly full capacity with its two runways. The expansion, estimated to cost £33 billion, aims to boost Heathrow’s annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers, enhancing the UK’s global connectivity and supporting trade and tourism.
Heathrow officials argue that the recent passenger figures underscore the urgent need for additional capacity. The airport’s current limitations are becoming more apparent as competitors like Istanbul continue to expand their operations. Istanbul Airport, with its expansive site, operates 24/7 and plans to open a fourth runway by the end of 2026, further cementing its status as a major international hub.
Meanwhile, other UK airports are also experiencing growth. In July, both London Stansted and Manchester airports reported their highest ever passenger numbers for the month, handling 3.1 million and 3.4 million travelers respectively. This trend reflects a broader increase in air travel demand within the UK.
